An introduction to the Emerging Role of Hydrogen as a Key Mechanism for the Transformation of the Energy Economy to Net Zero Carbon Emissions
Course Summary
This course will provide participants with an overview of clean hydrogen as a rapidly emerging carbon-free transportation fuel and industrial feedstock. Subject areas will include the whole range of hydrogen production technologies including electrolysis of water, steam methane reforming and also pyrolysis of biomass or other waste streams. It will also include all of the various end uses of hydrogen such as fuel for heavy transportation, as an industrial feedstock but also for blending with natural gas to reduce emissions from space heating. The course will explain why hydrogen technologies will become essential to transitioning the energy marketplace away from fossil fuels and eventually reducing carbon emissions to net zero.
Course Outline
• Basics of the science of hydrogen and how it is produced, transported and used including units of energy measurement and comparisons with other energy forms. Why hydrogen can become a sustainable non-carbon source of energy for multiple applications.
• Explanation of why hydrogen is an electrochemical source of electricity and therefor works in harmony with battery electric technologies to electrify transportation. How wind and solar resources can make hydrogen directly.
• Deeper dive into end-use applications and how hydrogen can compete economically as fuel for busses, trucks, trains, airplanes and ships.
• How decarbonizing heavy industries such as steel making and fertilizer manufacture can progress using hydrogen instead of coal or methane.
• Overview of government policies, mandates and regulations that will incentivize the production and use of hydrogen across Canada and how that will lead to the development of ‘Hydrogen Hubs’ across the country.
• Global snapshot of what is happening in other jurisdictions around advancing the hydrogen economy and how that has local impacts
INSTRUCTOR: Robert Stasko, P.Eng.
Robert Stasko is an environmentally focused professional with a large body of experience in the electricity sector. He is also an energy technology specialist who has worked in a various positions involving R&D, product development, market assessment and project implementation. In particular he has worked with the Ontario government to assist in the development and delivery of major energy policy and program initiatives. He has been involved in the development of energy technologies that span the full gamut from nuclear fusion pilot plants to advanced solar films to energy storage facilities and most recently to hydrogen applications. Robert is presently the Executive Director of the Hydrogen Business Council (HBC) and is active in developing ‘hydrogen hubs’ in Ontario that would include producers and end users of clean and green hydrogen.
